In tribute to courage and solidarity: A meeting at the Sugihara Museum in Yaotsu

Radosław Tyszkiewicz, President of the Poland–Japan Foundation, visited the Chiune Sugihara Memorial Hall in Yaotsu, Gifu Prefecture – a memorial site dedicated to the Japanese diplomat who, during World War II, while serving as Vice-Consul in Kaunas, Lithuania, issued thousands of transit visas, saving many Jews – including numerous Polish citizens – in defiance of his own government's orders. During a meeting with Yuko Ito, the Museum Director, they discussed the potential for cooperation between the Foundation and the Museum, including the implementation of joint educational and cultural projects aimed at commemorating Sugihara’s legacy and promoting Polish-Japanese historical relations. Chiune Sugihara’s story is a remarkable testament to civil courage, empathy, and solidarity, values that the Foundation seeks to more broadly promote in both Poland and Japan.
