The Poland-Japan Foundation is pleased to announce the publication of a new article by Philipp Buschmann entitled “Could Japanese Weapons Strengthen NATO’s Baltic Flank? Procurement Opportunities After Japan’s Export Policy Shift”. The article analyzes how reforms to Japan’s defense equipment export policy, introduced in April 2026, have opened new opportunities for cooperation with NATO countries located on the Baltic flank. Particular attention is devoted to areas such as naval platforms, anti-ship missiles, reconnaissance and sensor systems, and submarine technologies. While political and industrial constraints remain, the author indicates that the greatest potential lies in implementing targeted procurement programs, industrial partnerships, and technological cooperation between Japan and Europe.
